Keewaydin in south Minneapolis is home to Lake Nokomis, one of the most picturesque lakes of the Twin Cities. Named for the Ojibwe word “northwest wind,” Keewaydin was originally home to an important Native American village until European immigrants began arriving in the 19th century. The construction of Minneapolis’s streetcar routes increased access to Lake Nokomis, leading to a housing boom of Craftsman bungalows and mini-Tudors. Today, Keewaydin continues to boast the natural scenery of Lake Nokomis and Minnehaha Creek along with local shops and restaurants along Minnehaha Avenue.
